A 3D glimpse at the future of content delivery in consumer electronics

Just returned from this year’s IFA in Berlin.  The IFA is one of the world’s leading business events for consumer electronics and it is always the place to see the future through the eyes of the home entertainment industry.

The TV manufacturers were out in force displaying the latest in High Definition TV sets for the first time featuring 3D courtesy of with technology from digital cinema finding its way into prototype TVs.

This is going to make for interesting times in production of television programmes.   3D television requires stereoscopic cameras, editing and some serious data volumes in terms of delivering that content to homes. Only satellite delivery is going to provide the bandwidth in the mid term.

To help deliver the content for movies into the home is 3D Blu-ray disc. Panasonic is reported to have the 3D Blu-ray spec in final stages.
Next up on the 3D front was an exciting demo of 3D Playstation, it’s utterly immersive, and when the screens become commercially viable it will be the must have upgrade for the serious gamers.

All in all it was a great show and it gave me masses of food for thought as well as a huge Christmas list of things I can’t live without, both at home and here at re:fine!
